RECLAIMED FURNITURE / REPURPOSING / HINTS AND TIPS

Right, you’ve trawled Pinterest for inspiration, read all of the re-purposing blogs and watched endless videos of up-cycling projects on YouTube, time to shop….

HOW TO……. Shop for reclaimed furniture

⓵ MEASURE:

Measure the height width and depth of the intended place carefully. Be aware of the additional space needed should you be purchasing items with cupboards and drawers – you need to be able to open these easily. Make note of any access restrictions – will it physically fit? Through doors or up stairs? Measure everything twice and make notes. Taking photographs is also helpful. Don’t forget to take the tape measure with you on your shopping trip.

⓶ PLAN:

Have a clear idea of the item that you are looking for. What is its intended purpose? Does it need to be from a certain era to suit your property? Flick through magazines, websites and Pinterest for inspiration. It is really easy to be distracted and buy something you don’t need because it is a bargain/looks lovely.

⓷ BUT ALSO BE PREPARED TO FORGET THE PLAN:

Although we recommend the above, sometimes you will come across a piece of furniture which isn’t what you were looking for and simply fall in love with it. In this case, the plan goes out of the window and you may need to re-jig existing room layouts (or build an extension!) in order to have it in your life. We have all been there!

⓸ TAKE YOUR TIME:

Ok, you’re excited that you’ve finally found something perfect but don’t rush. An initial glance may just reveal some superficial scuffs / scratches which are easily rectified (or simply add to the charm) but take time to inspect it carefully. Check all joints for strength, remove any drawers, look inside / underneath / behind for signs of previous repairs or possible future ones.

⓹ BUT ALSO BE PREPARED TO ACT QUICKLY:

The beauty of reclaimed furniture is finding something truly unique, a ‘one off’. If you find this, sometimes you simply have to snap it up and buy it to secure it being yours. Most reclamation yards are happy to store items until you are ready to take delivery.

Happy hunting...
