Natural stone has been used as paving for Centuries and the finest example of this is considered to be York stone. This Yorkshire sandstone is known to have been quarried since the 14oo’s and by the 18th Century had become a large industry, providing flagstones, masonry and roofing materials. Appreciated for its high quality and durability, York stone was used throughout the Country.
Today the use of reclaimed flagstones, with their warm, weathered patina of age, can add instant character to a space and even add value to a property.
There is, of course, varying quality to be found within the different grades of this product from rough faced, misshapen ‘crazy paving’ through to the larger, heavier mill flags (commonly referred to in the trade as ‘ballbreakers’ due to them being such huge pieces of stone up to 5” thick!) From good quality, riven faced, external paving through to the premium ‘Cathedral’ grade flag and sawn, coursed paving.
At Winchcombe Reclamation, we always carry extensive stocks of York stone with an average of 400m² in stock at any one time. Our stock includes high quality riven York which is ideal for external projects. These random sized flags have a naturally rivened face and a good range of colouring. If a more formal look is desired, you may wish to consider smooth, sawn edged York as an option. The majority of these would have been street flags in a previous life and they are regulated in depth and often sized so that they can be laid ‘coursed’ (flags with the same width / random length) And then of course we have the higher grade ‘Cathedral’ York, the ‘cream of the crop’. These high quality flags have an extremely smooth, well-worn face and would suit for either external or internal use.
It is recommended, as a purchaser, that you consider these options and choose carefully what is best suited to your project. There are various price brackets but do take into account the added costs of haulage and labour. Remember, due to the durability of this material, it will be a job that will only need to be done once as, once laid, it will last a lifetime. A true investment.
Here at Winchcombe Reclamation, our stock of reclaimed paving isn’t limited to just York flags. Being in the heart of the Cotswolds, we carry a substantial stock of reclaimed limestone flooring. Reclaimed Cotswold stone flags are predominantly for internal use and, due to the extent of the limestone seam, colouring varies from the pale cream of Bath stone through to the desirable honey colour of the North Cotswolds. Complete floors are available as batches, a selection of flags are available for repairs and patching works and we also have Cabouchon flooring available (Limestone tiles with slate inserts) if you are looking for something a bit more special.
Other reclaimed paving options available include Welsh Pennant, Blue Lias, Portland Stone and Forest Sandstone. All of our paving is sold by the measure m² with the majority on measured pallets to help our customers visualise how much is needed.
